Mayfield Renshukan was formed in 1971. Chief instructor Sensei Abe McCarthy Nana Dan (7th Dan Black Belt), is still teaching Karate in Mayfield Today. Sensei Abe McCarthy won a Gold Medal at the World Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation Championships in Bali, Indonesia in 2001 in the Masters Category.

Mayfield Renshukan is the Cork location for the National Grading and Training Seminars with Kancho Kanazawa 10th Dan annually. Over the years many highly respected Sensei's from Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation Headquarters in Tokyo, have visited and trainied students in Mayfield Renshukan. Some of the highly respected Sensei's include: Kancho Kanazawa 10th Dan, Nobuaki Kanazawa Sensei 6th Dan, Manabu Murakami Sensei 7th Dan, Koga Sensei 8th Dan, Suzuki Sensei 6th Dan, Daizo Kanazawa Sensei 4th Dan, Kwok Sensei 8th Dan, and the whole SKIF Japan Team in 1994.
